4. Satan

    •    Use eSword to search for the word ‘satan’, using KJV+ as your Bible version. If you need help using eSword refer to the eSword website tutorials.

    •    Hover your mouse over the Strong’s number to see what the word means. Try to distinguish between actual meanings given and opinions offered: the meaning of a word appears after the :- symbol.

    •    To help in this, try searching for the Strong’s number for ‘satan’: H7854 in KJV+. Examine how the word is used and translated in the other Bible passages now listed.

    •    You’ll see that it’s very often translated ‘adversary’. Who is the adversary in each of these cases? What does this tell us about the word ‘satan’?

    •    Look again at the definition of the word ‘satan’. Is it a name, or is it just an ordinary word meaning ‘adversary’?

    •    It’s instructive to search for the word ‘satan’ in Young’s Literal Translation of the Bible (‘YLT’ in eSword). Then search for ‘adversary’. What do the results tell us about what happens when Bible words are translated literally with their true meanings?

This is just a short study to help you think about this subject and you might be surprised by your findings. It’s well worthwhile spending more time going into it more deeply.
